If you’re considering investing in solar panels, it’s essential to understand some key aspects before making a purchase. To help you make an informed decision, here are 10 things to know about solar panels when you’re buying them.

1. Types of Solar Panels:

Solar panels come in various types, including monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. Monocrystalline panels are the most efficient and expensive, while polycrystalline panels are cost-effective and widely used. Thin-film panels are flexible and lightweight, ideal for specific applications. Understanding the differences between these types will help you choose the one that best suits your needs.

2. Efficiency and Power Output:

Efficiency refers to the ability of a solar panel to convert sunlight into electricity. Higher efficiency panels produce more electricity for a given area, which means you can generate more power even in limited space. Consider the efficiency rating of the panels and balance it with your budget and available installation area.

3. Cost and Return on Investment:

Solar panel costs have significantly decreased over the years, making them more affordable. However, the upfront investment can still be substantial. When evaluating costs, consider the long-term savings on energy bills and the potential for government incentives or tax credits. Calculate the return on investment (ROI) to determine how quickly you can recoup your initial expenses.

4. Durability and Warranty:

Solar panels are designed to withstand various weather conditions, but their durability may vary. Look for panels with a sturdy construction and certifications for resistance to wind, hail, and other elements. Additionally, check the warranty offered by the manufacturer, as it typically covers defects, performance, and durability for a specified period.

5. Installation and Maintenance:

Solar panel installation should be done by professionals to ensure proper placement and connection to your electrical system. Understand the installation process and associated costs. Additionally, inquire about maintenance requirements, such as cleaning, inspection, and any potential costs involved.

6. Solar Panel Mounting Options:

Solar panels can be mounted in different ways, including rooftop, ground-mounted, or integrated into building materials. Evaluate the available mounting options based on your property and preferences. Rooftop installations are common but may require structural assessments and considerations. Ground-mounted systems offer flexibility in positioning and maintenance access.

7. Local Regulations and Permits:

Before installing solar panels, familiarize yourself with local regulations, zoning codes, and permit requirements. Some areas may have specific guidelines for solar panel installations that need to be followed. Ensure compliance to avoid any legal or regulatory issues.

8. Solar Inverter and Storage:

Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity, but most homes and businesses use alternating current (AC). A solar inverter is necessary to convert DC into AC. When purchasing solar panels, consider whether you need a string inverter, microinverters, or power optimizers. Additionally, if you’re interested in storing excess energy, explore battery storage options compatible with the panels.

9. Solar Panel Lifespan:

Solar panels are built to last, typically having a lifespan of 25 to 30 years. However, their efficiency may degrade over time, resulting in slightly reduced power output. Inquire about the expected degradation rate and choose panels with a minimal decline in performance.

By understanding the key aspects mentioned above, you’ll be better equipped to evaluate the options available and choose the right solar panel system for your needs. With renewable energy becoming increasingly important, embracing solar power is a step towards a sustainable future.

House Safety: Tricks That Help You Keep Your Appliances Safe During a Storm

Storms can be unpredictable and powerful, causing damage to homes and appliances. Lightning strikes, power surges, and flooding are common hazards during severe weather events. To protect your valuable appliances from potential damage, and for your house safety, it’s important to take precautions and follow some essential tricks. Here are some useful tips to help you keep your appliances safe during a storm.

  1. Unplug Appliances:
One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your appliances during a storm is to unplug them. By disconnecting your appliances from the power source, you eliminate the risk of power surges caused by lightning strikes or utility line issues. Unplug sensitive electronics such as televisions, computers, and gaming consoles to safeguard them from potential damage.
  2. Use Surge Protectors:
While unplugging is ideal, it may not always be practical for certain appliances or hard-to-reach outlets. In such cases, invest in high-quality surge protectors for added protection. Surge protectors help absorb excess electrical energy and prevent it from reaching your appliances. Be sure to choose surge protectors with sufficient joule ratings and indicator lights to indicate their status.
  3. Install Whole-House Surge Protectors:
To provide comprehensive protection for all your appliances, consider installing a whole-house surge protector. These devices are installed at your home’s electrical panel and can help suppress power surges throughout the entire electrical system. Whole-house surge protectors are particularly beneficial during storms when power fluctuations are more likely.
  4. Secure Outdoor Appliances:
If you have outdoor appliances like air conditioning units or refrigerators, make sure they are securely anchored. During high winds, these appliances can become projectiles and cause damage to your property or neighboring structures. Use hurricane straps, brackets, or tie-downs to secure outdoor appliances and prevent them from being displaced by strong gusts.
  5. Elevate Appliances:
If you live in an area prone to flooding, it’s crucial to elevate your appliances off the ground. Flooding can cause extensive damage to electrical components and render your appliances unsafe to use. Keep appliances like washers, dryers, and water heaters on platforms or stands to minimize the risk of water damage.
  6. Waterproof Essential Appliances:
For appliances that cannot be easily moved, consider waterproofing them as an extra precaution. You can find waterproof covers or bags specifically designed to protect appliances such as televisions or audio equipment. These covers provide an additional layer of defense against water damage during storms or flooding.
  7. Keep Refrigerators and Freezers Closed:
During power outages, it’s important to keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible. A closed unit will help retain the cold temperature, preserving perishable food for a longer period. Avoid opening the door unnecessarily to prevent warm air from entering, as this can lead to spoilage and food waste.
  8. Document Your Appliances:
Before a storm, take the time to document your appliances and their serial numbers. This information will be valuable for insurance purposes in case of damage or loss. Take photos or make a list of the appliances, noting their make, model, and any additional details that could assist in filing an insurance claim.
  9. Consider Backup Power Sources:
Investing in a backup power source, such as a generator or battery backup system, can provide temporary electricity during power outages. These backup systems can keep essential appliances running until the power is restored. Consult a professional to determine the appropriate backup power solution for your specific needs.
  10. Stay Informed and Prepared:
Lastly, staying informed and prepared is essential in safeguarding your appliances during a storm. Stay updated with weather forecasts and warnings to anticipate severe weather events. Create an emergency kit that includes essential supplies, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-operated radio. Being prepared allows you to take prompt action and minimize potential damage.

By implementing these tricks, you can greatly increase the chances of keeping your house safety and appliances safe during a storm. Taking proactive measures and investing in protective solutions will not only save you from costly repairs or replacements but also provide you with peace of mind during severe weather conditions. Remember, safety should always be a priority when dealing with storms and the potential hazards they bring.

In a world dominated by food monopolies, where quality and sustainability often take a backseat, it’s time to reclaim control over what we eat. The key lies in exploring easy and healthy alternatives that empower individuals and communities. In this captivating article, we dive into the concept of aquaponics and micro-farming, illuminating a path towards self-sufficiency and a truly nourishing food system. Get ready to break free from the chains of food monopolies and embrace a tastier, healthier, and more sustainable future.

The Tyranny of Food Monopolies

Food monopolies wield an iron grip on our modern food system, dictating what we eat, how it’s grown, and the impact it has on our health and the environment. These monopolies prioritize profit over our well-being, leading to the proliferation of unhealthy, processed foods and environmentally damaging farming practices. It’s time to challenge this status quo and explore alternative approaches that put the power back in our hands.

Aquaponics: A Paradigm Shift in Sustainable Food Production

Enter aquaponics, a revolutionary method that combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (soil-less plant cultivation) in a mutually beneficial symbiotic system. In this closed-loop system, fish waste provides nutrients for plants, while the plants filter the water for the fish. The result? A highly efficient, eco-friendly, and sustainable method of food production that yields fresh, organic produce and protein-rich fish.

With aquaponics, you can cultivate a wide range of vegetables, herbs, and even fruits, while simultaneously rearing fish, all within a compact and manageable space. Say goodbye to the limitations of traditional farming and embrace this innovative solution that maximizes productivity, conserves water, and minimizes waste. It’s time to take control of our food production and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of our labor.

Micro-Farming: From Seeds to Sustenance

For those with limited space or resources, micro-farming offers an accessible and fulfilling alternative. Micro-farms focus on growing food on a smaller scale, often in urban or suburban settings. By utilizing vertical gardening, container gardening, and hydroponics, even the tiniest balcony or backyard can become a thriving food-producing oasis.

Micro-farming empowers individuals and communities to cultivate their own fresh, nutritious produce, free from harmful pesticides and additives. From vibrant salad greens to aromatic herbs and even root vegetables, the possibilities are endless. Rediscover the joy of connecting with nature, savoring the satisfaction of growing your own food, and nurturing a sustainable and resilient food system.

Benefits Beyond the Plate: Health, Environment, and Community

The benefits of embracing alternatives to food monopolies extend far beyond the plate. By choosing aquaponics and micro-farming, we nourish our bodies with fresh, nutrient-dense produce, supporting our overall health and well-being. Simultaneously, we reduce our carbon footprint, conserve water resources, and mitigate the negative impact of industrial agriculture on the environment.

Moreover, cultivating our own food fosters a sense of community and connection. Sharing harvests, exchanging knowledge, and collaborating with neighbors creates bonds that strengthen resilience and foster a culture of self-sufficiency. By taking collective action, we can challenge the dominance of food monopolies and forge a path towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

A Food Revolution in Our Hands

Breaking free from the clutches of food monopolies is not an insurmountable task. Through aquaponics and micro-farming, we can cultivate a healthier, more sustainable food system from the ground up. It’s time to take control of our plates, nourish our bodies, and build resilient communities. Let’s embark on this journey together and revolutionize the way we grow, consume, and enjoy our food. Remember, the power to change the world lies in each and every bite we take.

So, are you ready to join the food revolution?

Messages During An Emergency – The Key To A Survival Plan

Every family and even community living in a disaster prone area should prepare a sound and clear emergency communications set up, so messages during an emergency can be the key to a good survival plan. It’s of important importance that you train among each other and ensure that everyone understands the steps completely. This can be especially true for kids, since they’re prone to forget what doesn’t interest them personally. Otherwise, they should understand the importance of your training sessions and why you, as a family, have to do this.

Optionally, you can try to turn it slightly into a game, however you still have to point out that, in a real emergency scenario it won’t be as fun as during the training. The concept is to engage all members of the family, have them all understand the importance of your emergency communications plan and yet, not be stressed during the training.

The principle behind the acronym COMMUNICATE

This acronym is popular among preppers (and crafted by ready.gov) and they use it to easily remember some of the most crucial points of an emergency communication plan.

Create the family plan and stick to it. Spread among all family members emergency phone numbers, including the personal phone numbers of each family member. Give information to meeting locations.
Options: you can use various items to establish communication. From the cell phone, to stationary phones and emails as well.
Make sure to get acquainted with your child’s school emergency plan
Make a plan on where to meet if you can’t get to your home, in case of a disaster/emergency
Understand – it takes time to get through to all your family members. It requires patience. Don’t panic.
Needs – your pets also must be considered, including their needs. Take a cage if you have a cat. Don’t leave them behind.
Information – You need to stay informed at all times. Get an emergency radio, watch the news, read online, etc. In severe cases, only the battery-operated radio will be of help.
Copy the plans, and keep them in a place which you can access within seconds. This is especially important during emergencies, when you need to leave quickly.
Ask your children and partner how they feel, both about the situation and the emergency plan. Discuss the plan together. Make sure the kids understand it.
Take your children and spouse to see the meeting locations and spots. Go there together now and then in order to remember the directions. They need to get through to them without much of a thought.
Emergency – Talk about the different levels and severity of emergency situations. Talk about the dangers of each emergency type, and how that will affect your plan.

This was a simplified overview offered by the government so that you remember the most important aspects of the emergency communications plan.

When talking about the emergency communications plan, we need to point out the purposes of this plan. These are three simple purposes:

  • To initiate the plan, or change some step of its execution
  • To initiate/inform the beginning a stage/phase of the plan
  • To inform of your status/requirements, also known as situation report (SITREP)

It can be said straightaway that if you need to communicate for some other reason or purpose, this suggests that your plan has actually failed. An emergency communications plan shouldn’t be about anything however the beginning, phases, ending of the plan, and regular reports. No other reason should be enforced in your plan, otherwise you’ll clutter it with unimportant info, and your plan will become hard to remember. Of course, this shouldn’t discourage you. No plan is bullet-proof or devoid of mistakes. Be prepared to adapt the plan according to the situation.

There are five objectives your plan must meet. Your plan ought to be Complete, Clear and Concise, Unambiguous and at last Confirmed. While these concepts are simple to understand we need to focus for a while on explaining the details.

Your message must be clear. This means two things – the recipient must be able to hear you clearly, and also understand you immediately. This may prove a bit hard if you use a walkie-talkie or a cell phone is bad reception. This is why your message may also have to be very short, and send only the most very important info. Grammar doesn’t matter during emergencies, thus don’t worry about that.

The message should of course be complete. This depends on the situation, but if as an example, you need to meet somebody at a given location (where), don’t assume they know when this meeting can occur. Give them the full image. You may also wish to know why they need to meet you – do they need something, are they in trouble, are they hurt, etc?

Unambiguous messages are also by default clear and concise. Yet, many folks tend to believe that if they tell you the location, they know exactly which part of the location. They assume you know about ‘the circle spot’ at your location, but what if there are four circles? Ensure you relay the message as clearly as possible without any hint of ambiguity. The recipient should be ready to find you with almost no additional clarifying calls.

Concise messages may turn ambiguous. It’s a pure art to make the message concise, clear and unambiguous. This is why training and dry-practicing your emergency communications plan is thus crucial. Keep in mind which places could be used for meeting locations, and come up with the clearest message you can, and stick to it. Come up with it in a calm and relaxed situation. The brain doesn’t necessarily work at best levels while you’re in danger and possibly panicked.

And of course, the message must be confirmed by the other side of the reception. You would like to establish messages or send signals somehow to indicate that the other person on the phone has successfully relayed the message, and you understood and received it. So, confirm that. Optionally, you could shortly rephrase the message, and share what you understood of it, so there’s no risk for miscommunication.

The meeting location

After we’ve established what a successful communication is, we need to proceed further to the more precise stages of coming up with.

Since disasters sometimes strike quite unexpectedly, or the time from the alert/warning issued to the actual disaster strike could also be too short for your family to gather at home, you need to establish locations where to meet, depending on where you’re at that particular moment. We advise you to pick two completely different locations: one in your neighborhood, and another outside of it.

In the first scenario, you assume you’re all together reception, and as the disaster strikes, you must gather together at a specific location at home. This can be anything – the basement, porch, or any location which will not endanger you all further. The porch isn’t a good plan during a tornado, while the basement isn’t good during earthquakes. Choose the spot carefully.

The second location should be picked in case neither of you’ll meet at home within reasonable time limits. The children are at school, you’re at work or driving, etc. the location you choose should be as safe as possible, and should be familiar to all of you. If it’s not, go there many times, all together, to get used to reaching this location.

Finally, you need to be aware that if one or more members of your family can’t get home, you must appoint somebody (a relative or very close friend) to look after your pets (if you have any). This person may have to get to the children (if it’s you who can’t meet at the appointed location), or care for someone who is left at home (e.g. an elderly person), etc.

The actual communication method

Usually, a cell phone will get you through the people you need to quickly contact. Even during disaster events when the lines get jammed, you can still get through to a person outside the emergency area/state.

This means you must have at least two additional contacts – one inside the affected area (a spouse, a relative, or a close friend), and one contact who is outside the area. If you can’t get to the first contact, you can almost always get through to the other person. Usually long distance calls will go through the jam.

Also, if you need to urgently contact your own family members, you don’t have to try and call them. First of all, you may not even be able to because the lines will be jammed. The best and most recommended method is texting. This is because text messages require less bandwidth to get to the intended person.

As we already advised, prepare a contact sheet (you can find such sheets on FEMA’s website) where you should write all contacts related to you. It should include phone contacts of your family members, parents, guardians, general practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, etc., including national and local emergency phone numbers. This sheet of paper must be copied to all your family members, or let them memorize the numbers. For small children and elderly with memory issues, the printed copy should be always with them.

In addition to the printed copies, insert all of these contacts in all members’ cell phones. Place one copy next to the stationary phone, at home.

The communication plan

Here is the essence and core of the topic, and it is related to how exactly you are to implement all your communication ideas and execute them as best as possible.

First of all, you need to consider the possible events and reactions during a specific disaster situation. For example, if you need to call your spouse in order to meet to your location, but are not getting a response, you may get worried. While on the other side, your spouse, let’s assume, doesn’t hear the phone calling because it’s in her backpack. This is a possible scenario, and you need to go through all options which may cause your plan to fail.

So, plan accordingly all steps. The above example shows that you didn’t think of the Confirm stage of your plan. You never managed to relay the message in the first place.

Here are the aspects of your plan which you must consider:

  • Who calls and requests a meeting;
  • What’s the purpose of the call (do you need to bring something?);
  • Must you accomplish something before the meeting;
  • What’s the location spot (both general and specific);
  • The time you’ll arrive at the location;
  • What will you do if this meeting fails (or something changes)?

If you consider these steps very well, and plan your communication using this plan, you have a very high chance of succeeding in reaching all family members, and eventually meeting at the desired location.

Types of communication

Another aspect of your plan is to establish how to designate the (if any) additional phases of your plan. You could for example relay a message that the person to meet you will see a broken bus at the corner of Street A. If they do, they are at the right stage and can move on. If they don’t see it, they must go back some, until they find the broken bus. This type of communication is called impersonal.

Personal communication is when you talk directly to the person and you are physically at the same location. You can touch the person. Talking on Skype isn’t personal, but telecommunication. Any of these types of communication must be somehow integrated and talked-through within your plan.

After all, cell phones aren’t always a 100% reliable medium, so you need to somehow try to get to one another using other communication techniques and methods. Come up with these methods together, so that all of you approve and remember them. And don’t forget to always include the unfavorable outcome in which your message may not get through to the recipient(s).

Another important aspect to keep in mind is that you need several back-up plans for different stages of emergency. For example, your primary plan is Plan A. This could be getting in touch with everyone and communicating via cell phones. If this goes unhindered, then Plan A has proven enough. Usually Plan A should be considered the best plan. This is also the plan which has a higher chance of succeeding and relaying the message (and arranging the meeting).

And yet, there is some chance that Plan A may fail to be executed. For this unpleasant situation you must have a Plan B, or an alternate plan. This plan should be just as useful and applicable as the first. A good example would be to use a communication device, different from a cell phone – for example Skype, walkie talkie, communications radio, ham radio, etc.

The contingency plan is one that backs up the above two if they failed. For example, you lost your cell phone, or ham radio, and need to find another way to get to your other family members. So, decide a good way for relaying the messages in a different way, it could be personal or impersonal, but if you lost your cell phone, and this was your primary and alternate plan, then it can’t be telecommunication related.

Yet, you can get to, let’s say, an internet zone where you have access to a computer. You can send messages, but you must be sure the other end also has a computer to receive the message. You get the point.

Finally, the emergency plan if all others fail, shouldn’t require any communication at all. You all must know what to do, what place to get to, etc. if you can’t reach one another. This may mean that all of you will get to a certain place or special location. It must also be safe (in case there’s a tornado, flash flood, tsunami, etc) outside.

National emergency communication plan

Usually the state/country must ensure that it can safely relay emergency messages to its citizens. This often happens via emergency radios and other such media. For emergency radios seem to be the most widely used and relied on. Most such products can be charged in several different ways to ensure that you can receive messages/emergency news/alerts regularly, without or at least minimizing any blackouts.

You must make sure that all members of your family can have unhindered access to such a radio, or even give one to each family member. Some emergency radios have a two-way communications system – send and receive messages.

Finally, practice your plans, both primary and secondary. Turn it into something fun, but make sure your kids understand that once you need to do it for real, then it’s a serious matter.

As long as you’re well prepared, and you discussed together as many options as possible, you significantly minimize the risk for your family during a disaster. Don’t forget the contact sheet and give it out to everyone in your household, and keep in mind to have a long distance contact to act as an intermediary if you can’t get through to your family.

How To Prepare For A Solo Life Off-Grid

0

Many people dream or desire to live off-grid by ourselves, enjoying a peaceful life of solitude. However it’s easy to underestimate the issue of this. Living off the grid is hard enough if you have family and different homesteaders around you. Going it alone is even more difficult. Here are some things to think about before deciding to live alone on your off-grid homestead:

Consider your physical strength

An off-grid lifestyle needs plenty of physical labor. Tilling the garden, delivering a calf, or chopping firewood are all common tasks on the homestead. So if you’re going it alone, be ready to do all the hard work yourself.

Review your technical knowledge and skills

Most off-grid homesteads generate power from the land’s resources. Typical power sources are the sun for solar power, the wind for wind power, and flowing water for hydro-power. Many times these primary power systems are saved with a diesel generator.

The common power generation technologies can malfunction or just stop working. As an example, solar energy is a great technology. However, it usually entails electronic controllers like an inverter to convert captured energy into a type usable by modern appliances and equipment. You’ll need to know how to program, maintain and troubleshoot the inverter. Generating power from the wind or water rely on mechanical parts that can wear down, stop working together, or just break. Finally, while diesel generators are reliable workhorses, many years of experience with them have taught me that the smallest issue will make a diesel generator come to a crashing halt.

So find out how to maintain, troubleshoot and repair the power generation equipment you rely on. Sure, you can get specialists to come out and fix things, but this can be expensive, especially if you live a long way from metropolitan areas.

Prepare for medical emergencies

For the solo off-gridder living in a remote location, it’s essential to own first-aid knowledge and access to emergency medical care just in case of a serious injury.

For first-aid knowledge, take each the standard and advanced first-aid courses available through local schools or government agencies. After mastering the talents, ensure the homestead is fully stocked to handle everything from a minor burn to a gunshot wound to a severed limb.

You also need access to emergency medical aid. If you live far away from a hospital, check out plans where you’ll be able to pay a small annual fee to get helicopter transfer to the nearest hospital. Analysis the plans carefully to understand how they work and their limitations.

Don’t forget security

Living by yourself on an isolated property may be a dream come true for many — including me. But it’s not a safe world out there. There are people who have no compunction about stealing what’s yours, whether or not you’re home at the time.

So learn self-defense, and get the guns you need to protect your life in the case of theft or home invasion. You’ll also need to think about the wildlife around you, and choose the correct firearms to protect yourself against curious bears, mountain lions, or any of the other predators out there that roam sparsely populated areas.

Cultivate working relationships

I get it. you want to live on your off-grid homestead alone and watch out of yourself by yourself. But things happen when you’ll simply need someone else’s help. For instance, there are probably plenty of chores around the homestead — tending the garden, feeding the chickens, milking the goat — that basically got to be done a day. If you seriously hurt yourself and end up bedridden or in the hospital for a couple of days, it’s good to possess someone you can trust who can competently take care of the homestead during your absence. So get out there and make some friends and build some relationships, even if it’s the last thing you want to do.

Living alone is hard work. Learn the correct skills and build the correct relationships to be successful at it. Taking the correct steps now will permit you to continue your solitude, even after a serious injury or other incident prevents you from caring temporarily for the homestead.

While it may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, the concept of creating water holds promise as a potential solution to alleviate the effects of the megadrought. Let’s delve into three groundbreaking approaches that offer a glimmer of hope in the midst of parched landscapes.

1. Atmospheric Water Generation: Harvesting H2O from Thin Air

Imagine drawing water from thin air. Atmospheric water generation technology aims to do just that. By utilizing advanced condensation techniques, these systems extract moisture from the atmosphere and convert it into potable water. With the ability to harness even the slightest humidity, atmospheric water generation has the potential to provide a decentralized and sustainable source of water in drought-stricken areas.

2. Desalination Innovations: Transforming Seawater into Lifesaver

While desalination is not a new concept, recent advancements are making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. Desalination plants, powered by renewable energy sources, can turn seawater into freshwater by removing salt and impurities. By expanding the reach and affordability of desalination technology, we can tap into an abundant resource—our oceans—and alleviate the strain on freshwater supplies during droughts.

3. Cloud Seeding: Raining on Drought’s Parade

Cloud seeding, a technique that has been around for decades, involves dispersing substances into the atmosphere to encourage cloud formation and precipitation. By deploying silver iodide or other suitable agents, scientists can stimulate rainfall in regions plagued by drought. While the effectiveness of cloud seeding remains a topic of debate, ongoing research and development may unlock its full potential as a drought-fighting tool.

The Role of Conservation and Sustainability

While water generation technologies offer hope, it is crucial to underscore the importance of conservation and sustainability in tackling the megadrought crisis. Every drop saved counts, and adopting water-efficient practices in agriculture, industry, and households is paramount. From implementing advanced irrigation systems to fixing leaky infrastructure, our collective efforts can significantly reduce water waste and preserve this precious resource for future generations.

Collaboration and Innovation: The Way Forward

Addressing the megadrought requires a multi-faceted approach, involving collaboration and innovation on a global scale. Governments, scientists, and communities must join forces to support research, fund water generation projects, and implement sustainable water management strategies. By fostering a spirit of innovation and cooperation, we can conquer the challenges posed by the megadrought and secure a more resilient future.

The Time for Action is Now

The megadrought of 2023 looms as a formidable challenge, testing our resolve and ingenuity. However, it is within our power to confront this crisis head-on. Through the development and implementation of water generation technologies, coupled with conservation efforts, we can navigate the treacherous waters of water scarcity. Let us rise to the occasion, united in our determination to conquer the megadrought and ensure a sustainable water future for all.

Remember, the clock is ticking. The time for action is now. Together, we can turn the tide against the unforgiving grip of drought and forge a path towards a more water-abundant world.

Anonymous: Is World War 3 Just Around the Corner?

Anonymous – Conspirer or Hero?

A group that’s growing more influential by the day is Anonymous. They got a lot of exposure after the hit series Mr. Robot: real info blended with fiction… Backing their true activist way of warning people about the real dangers that no one talks about. But there is a big debate though, whether what they say are just conspiracy theories or if they truly are modern Robin Hoods, heroes trying to save the world.

Anonymous Strikes
Anonymous logo

A New World Order Is Coming?

The “hacktivists” from Anonymous warn that World War 3 is inevitable and might happen sooner than we expect it.

The group uploaded a video on YouTube, last night at 23:47. The well-known character Guy Fawkes, appears on the footage stating that WW3 is not a matter of if… But just a matter of when.

The group advise people to prepare for the worst.

The fact that US and North Korea continue to move “strategic pawns into place” as in a game of chess, is well known. They also state that “unlike past world wars, although there will be ground troops, the battle is likely to be fierce, brutal and quick. It will be also be globally devastating, both on environmental and economical levels.”

Can the big bad nightmare be just around the corner as “the pragmatic Chinese (…) are starting to lose their patience?”

When Will the World Collapse?

The hackers claim that it’s all because of President Trump’s test of the Minuteman 3 ICBM, that took place last week.

Another reason would be the warnings Japanese officials issue to the public. All of this make a nuclear attack sound more and more plausible.

Japanese citizens are already aware of a future nuclear attack: “They were told to keep a solid nearby building in mind to take cover in an announcement they would have no more than a 10-minute warning of an impending nuclear strike.”

On the other hand, China tries to pursue its citizens in the Hermit Kingdom to go back home as soon as possible. The reason is that the nuclear weapons program creates more and more tension.

Is WW3 Around the Corner?

3 superpowers are joint in together so maybe more will follow, as Anonymous states.

Australia also has a nice and warm place at the table, a “strategic location in the Indian ocean”. They prepare the battle hand in hand with the Trump administration, having more than 1000 US troops in the country.

Now… The question is… Are We really that close to the most unfortunate war? Is it just another conspiracy theory? Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry when talking about an abomination such as this… The end of the world as we know it.

The hackers concluded as usual, with their motto: “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget.”

We’ll just have to wait and to see, trying to stay as safe as possible.

Different theories, same problem

There are many controversial theories about the global warming and its causes. Even if some are saying that the main source of global warming is pollution, Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of space research at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, is one of the scientists who believes that the causes are natural. His theory is based on the fact that not only Earth is having trouble with warming. There are other planets in our Solar System with such problems. Mars, for example, is one of the other planets which is having a bad time with the heat. National Geographic explains “in 2005 data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide <<ice caps>> near Mars’s south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row”.

But it is not about your position towards global warming. It is about the inevitable effects it can have on our species you should be aware of and its deeper causes than massive flooding.

Global Warming Retaliation - Warming Up Desees
Mars Warming

Dear deer

Bacillus Anthracis, known as Anthrax, is a quickly spreading virus. It has infected more than 1000 reindeer and 40 people, in July 2016. The story didn’t end there. A boy has been found dead in Yamal Peninsula from Siberia, one month later. He was only 12 years old. Other 10 people got to the hospital.

A team of bio-warfare scientists from the Russian government has unfold since then. They found out that in permafrost, a thickness of material of frozen soil, an Anthrax infected reindeer has been trapped.

Global Warming Retaliation - Warming Up Desees

Once brought to life the virus could harm or be deadly to men or animals. It might also “open a Pandora’s box of diseases” as BBC mentions. Moreover, the French University Aix-Marseille evolutionary biologist Jean-Michel Claverie says that the darkness, cold, and lack of oxygen of the Permafrost is the perfect climate for the conservation of microbes and viruses.

Is it possible for viruses that are older than humanlike species to be preserved for such a long time? In 2007 scientists conducted a study that led to the revival of an 8-million-year-old bacterium, which is twice older than any sign of hominid ever existed. The study shows that once they are revived, the viruses become infectious.

“Gates” throughout the Global Warming

Now we can relate to what the owner of one of the biggest companies in the world, Bill Gates, threatened. He should be at least considered because of his involvement in the industry of vaccinations. He claims that there are viruses even stronger than Ebola. Those viruses can kill millions of people if they ever make contact with the general population.

Those might be the reasons why many of the governments in the world are trying to provide their population with respiratory gears for protecting against biological contagion. We know very well the fact that if the Spanish flu or even Ebola were spreading and infecting more quickly, there could be no human race anymore.

However, BBC relates that we should not be overly concerned, but still focus on important matters like climate change. As the northern warms, the southern diseases are more likely to get stronger. Pathogens like malaria, cholera and dengue fever develop vigorously at warmer temperatures.

All in all, even if we can’t manipulate specific matters, it doesn’t mean we must ignore them.

Surviving A Nuclear Blast

0

Why do you have to be prepared for that?

Nuclear Blast- how a mushroom cloud looks
Nuclear Blast- how a mushroom cloud looks

Given the whole word has been a little unpredictable lately, staying prepared for a nuclear blast is something you should really be thinking about.

Anonymous has recently released footage about an imminent WW3.

Also, the American government just revised its plan of survival in case of a nuclear blast.

“A nuclear blast is an explosion with intense light and heat, a damaging pressure wave, and widespread radioactive material that can contaminate the air, water, and ground surfaces for miles around. A nuclear device can range from a weapon carried by an intercontinental missile launched by a hostile nation or terrorist organization, to a small portable nuclear device transported by an individual. All nuclear devices cause deadly effects when exploded, including blinding light, intense heat (thermal radiation), initial nuclear radiation, blast, fires started by the heat pulse and secondary fires caused by the destruction,” according to the Government.

Keeping that in mind, knowing how to survive such an unfortunate event is a must.

First of all, don’t panic!

A nuclear attack is unpredictable. If you are on ground zero, chances of survival are next to none.

But, if you’re a few miles away from the blast, survival chances increase.

If you are, for example, 10 miles away, you’ll probably have 10-15 seconds to figure out what to do.

In this case, first of all, you have to look for shelter. On a 600 sq miles area around the blast everything would be levelled to the ground.

You’ll have just 10-20 minutes after the explosion to hide from the deadly amount of radiation, so you’ll have to think fast.

If you’re wearing flammable clothes you should get rid of them as quickly as possible.

Travelling after a nuclear attack might be tough, so you’ll definitely need good map reading and navigation skills.

The ability of reading wind can be very useful because you’ll know the direction to ground zero and you’ll be able to avoid the area. A Geiger counter would be really helpful and would be a good idea to have one in your survival kit.

Where should you go if you’re out on the street during a nuclear attack

Radiation levels outside will skyrocket. After 24 hours they’ll level down by 80% so you’ll have to stay indoors for at least a day.

If you can reach your home, or a place you know is just minutes away, is best to head there fast.

While you’re inside lay as close to the ground as possible. Hide behind brick or concrete walls.

Even if you’re miles away from the explosion, protect your eyes because the light and radiation  can blind you.

Plan Ahead

However, if you’re lucky, you’ll be at home. The best you can do is be prepared.

Just put together a survival kit. Have a plan ready and tell your family about it. Make sure everyone knows what to do in case something bad happens.

In your survival kit, along with a Geiger counter (a device for measuring radiation levels). It will be best to have civilian gas masks too.

How to build a fallout room in your home

How a fallout room shoud look
How a fallout room should look

The best thing you want to have in your home, is a fallout room for protection. You can build it in your cellar or your basement. You will want to build the walls as dense as possible. Use concrete, brick, sand, anything you can find, even wood, in addition to the existing walls. Also add nails, a hammer and a torch to your survival kit, in case you’ll need to rebuild the place after the blast. You will be living there for at least two days, but it might be better to be prepared for a couple of weeks.

When using the fallout room make sure you are as clean as possible. It’s smart to have water stored (at least one gallon per day per family member).  Remember that soap is very important too. A portable toilet can turn out to be useful. Don’t use any kind of conditioner because it will bind the radioactive material to your hair.

Supplies

Remember… You can’t eat or drink anything that’s been contaminated. If you want to survive the fallout, make sure you have enough food and clean water. You can remove the radioactive material from your water supply with a normal water filter. Borax or activated carbon will do the trick.

Remember to bring plates, forks, knives and any other kitchen objects that you think might turn out to be helpful. An underground garden would be a great addition and could save your life. If you can, you can even learn how to take care of a bee hive. A dozen bees would be enough to pollinate the crop. Outside bees would definitely go extinct in case of a nuclear attack.

Don’t forget about warm clothsblanketsbootsgloves, bed pad, toilet supplies, cleaners and other disinfectants. If you take your clothes off, you can get rid of about 90% of the radioactive dust. Given the fact that you will discard your clothes as soon as possible. After that, remember to choose the ones in warm colours. Do that if you want to reduce the burns you may get on your skin. Perfume and baby powder also block radiations.

Speaking of supplies, you should not forget about all kind of medications you might need. Bring an extra set of special pills if you suffer from anything. Take into consideration that you’ll most probably feel ill. If you don’t have access to medication, you can look into natural remedies, such as Vitamin C,E, natural antioxidants, etc.

Technology is vital

You’ll need a radio and extra batteries in order to stay in touch with the outside world. Keep in mind that radiation can’t be seen or felt so try not to go out. Stay up to date using a TV or a radio. Keep your phone near, in case the lines would still work and try to have an internet connection.

Socially, a nuclear blast is a crisis

This might be one of the most important things to consider for your surviving plan. In scenarios like this all your social life will change completely. You will have limited supplies and people will definitely change their behaviour. There is no quick or easy way to recover after a nuclear blast. Prepare to deal with this. Discuss it carefully with your loved ones. Try not to look too suspicious though to avoid uncomfortable situations. After the fallout you might have to live in small communities… And with a limited amount of supplies there might be a constant battle for you and your family’s own safety.

Everything will change

The biggest problem after a nuclear attack are shifts in society. The effects of the radioactive material will last for years and years. Your whole life will change. Maybe the entire human species could be in danger. The effects of radiation can lead to conceiving problems for the children and the new adults exposed to the them.

This aspect doesn’t have any viable solution so far. Most probably, step by step, the society will rebuild itself.

Keep in mind that you should always balance staying positive with having a good survival plan while trying to make the best of everyday, because this is what matters most.

Why isn’t Washington preparing for a nuclear war?

How Far Away From A Nuclear War Are We?

Even though the situation between North Korea and USA is getting more and more tensed and North Korea keeps threatening with nuclear attacks, Washington is not allowed to prepare its citizens for the eventuality of the beginning of the World War 3.
State law does not allow any advance planning.

Dick Nelson, The Lawmaker

It’s all due to a law, which passed in 1983: “The comprehensive, all-hazard emergency plan authorized under this subsection may not include preparation for emergency evacuation or relocation of residents in anticipation of nuclear attack.”

The author of this law is the former Democratic state lawmaker, Dick Nelson. He states that the USA needs this law in order to prove its peaceful ethics. “It was about finding a middle ground we could all agree on,” he said. He still agrees in the present. Even more, he claims that if Seattle were to be attacked, there are probably close to 0 chances of survival, anyway.

North Korea And Its Nuclear Tests

North Korea claims the first hydrogen bomb test in January 2016

In the meantime, North Korea prepares its citizens in case of a nuclear blast and is in a constant search for new nuclear weapons, while they are updating the old ones.

North Korea has a nuclear program, but we don’t know exactly how powerful their weapons are. The last tests they were successfully conducted in 2016.

Are they atomic bombs or hydrogen bombs? Hydrogen bombs are more destructive and powerful than the atomic ones. Even so, in 2006, 2009 and in 2013 they tested atomic bombs. In January 2016 though, North Korea claimed that the tests were on hydrogen bombs. Even if we don’t speak about bombs, North Korea still constitutes a great military power worldwide. How close is World War 3 and what chances do American civilians have to survive a nuclear blast?

Are We Ready?

As a response to Nelson, retired General Barry McCaffrey calls the law `goofy`.

“Certainly it’s a goofy thing to not tell people to think about a major real threat,” he said. “What we’re trying to achieve is deterrence, which means ballistic missile defence.”

All in all, more and more Americans are preparing themselves for a nuclear war, as the government is not doing anything.

The best idea is to take a day off and make an emergency plan with your family, just in case anything bad happens.  Take some hours and read some articles on survival, like this one, and try to stay safe. There is nothing defensive about being prepared.

Things To Know When You Are Hiking In 7 Steps

0

Things To Do When You Are Hiking

When you are hiking, there is a special feeling. The one that millions of Americans are enjoying each and every year. This leisure activity that anyone does when they go camping. Even though I myself understand the curiosity of wondering, there are a few things you have to do when you are hiking, to assure your coming back.

As the day goes by, the folks decide they had enough of this trip. Anyhow, trying to get back to the camp may seem easy, as many things lookalike, but that’s the thing with the nature – anything looks the same. Therefore, many end up lost and maybe even injured.

Try to take these advises into account when you are next going in a trip. It is very easy to learn how to survive as it doesn’t imply you to carry all your staff with you or being an expert. It is about being aware of people’s mistakes.

Be prepared for your trip

The nature always plays by its own rules. Always be prepared with the right clothing because when hiking the temperature can drop even more than 15 degrees. Don’t forget to prepare the medical first kit for hiking. The wildness can always injury you and the most typical accidents are twisting an ankle. If you do not prepare properly it can be harmful for you and it can also get deadly. Preparing for the journey is also the most important lesson for any trip.

Keep in touch with the group

Walking around the nature alone can be one of the biggest pleasures on Earth, if at the right time. But then again, as in travelling without a GPS, you should never play the lone wolf. This kind of attitude can get you killed and there is no glory in that. Therefore, you should always let people know where are you going and when you are coming back. Finding you in a smaller area is easier for the help to come. Never forget your personal Bluetooth locator at home just to be sure.

Don’t underestimate the trail

Underestimating the trail can lead to the last road to some of us. The last people to come to the arts of hiking usually act like a new born. They are likely to overvalue their physical condition and even their hiking abilities. Never go on a track which is marked as hard. You have to “make your way up” so you should always check for the path you want to climb before.

Stay on the planned road

You should always keep to the road you have planned from the beginning. If you just plan on going off-trail, do it. Many people including myself went off-trail, but you should not wonder on the wrong ways if you are not prepared for this. Firstly, always make sure to have the right gear for the road you picked. It is nothing more important than be prepared for the unexpected. Most of the beginners end up lost and injured because they just went off-trail. Secondly, always check for the surroundings. Stay around the area you have already checked on and know. Do not go far from the places you know unless you are a hunter. Too many people do not even check the area they intend to camp on and this is the most common mistake that get people injured.

Can’t touch this

When you are hiking bad terrain, never trust the weeds around. They can hide holes of snakes or other biting insects and you surely will regret it. Moreover, they are usually not very stable and can easily put you in danger. One of the most common mistakes at beginners is that they do not pay attention to the surrounding environment. So pay attention where you put your hands, especially in the wilderness.

The sixth sense

Travelling in the nature is not rocket science and you do not have to use your sixth sense. You don’t even to use 5. If you are able to use your eyes, ears and nose you should cover everything you need to know. Never rely only on eyes as they may not be able to give you the full picture are expecting. The combination of these three can sometimes save your life or spare time. Besides that, you will never feel the full connexion with the nature if you do not use all of them. You must understand that using these senses will make it more enjoyable and safer to travel when going outdoors.

H2O to go

If you have checked the area and did not found any water around or the way to any, you have to make sure you will be hydrated. Another common mistake that people make is underestimate the amount of water they need. The nature will not work it out for you so you need to bring more water than you need to survive. Water does not mean life just when you are thirsty. It is helpful on cooking and many survival techniques.

All in all, we all need to be aware of the dangers of hiking. The more you know, the more chances you have to be fine. Or at least, handle any situation you face. You will have a peacefully and enjoyable camping if you just do not make the same mistakes many people do. And of course, always be prepared for unexpected things from nature.

Four Prepper Projects to Try

0

Four Prepper Projects to Try

Spring weather has finally resurfaced in many regions of the country. It is time once again to begin working on our outdoor preparedness projects and practicing our survival skills.

After several months cooped up inside, we can now comfortably get back to embarking upon enhancements to our prepper retreat or homestead and preparing for the coming growing and livestock birthing season.

Learning new skills and cross-training other members of your family (or mutual assistance group) should be an integral aspect of your overall prepping arrange. If the only person in the family or group knows how to help birth a calf in distress, or how to reload ammunition, the anticipated survival chances of the clan decrease considerably if that one all-important individual is out of commission, or dead, when their skills are required.

Every single prepper I know looks at their retreat or homestead as a work in progress. There is always some new concept to check, repair to make, project to try, or something to build.

Here’s a round-up of the top four spring prepper projects and skills to include into your survival weekend practice sessions or to figure onto your future projects list!

1. Dakota Fire Hole

A Dakota fire hole is a simple fire-building technique that creates little smoke. There is no need to attract unwanted attention during a survival situation by sending smoke signals to alert potential marauders to your position.

When light, the Dakota fire hole pushes hot air from the fire exit points through the highest of the fire pit. This process creates suction which in turn draws fresh air into the hole. The air then tunnels down through the base until it reaches the flames.

As the Dakota fire hole temperature increases via oxygen combustion, even more air is sucked into the tunnel – increasing the temperature of the fire continuously. The fire holes burns fuel (wood) far more efficiently than a typical fire ring, creating a hotter cooking or warming surface while using a lot less wood in the process.

When stealth is a major concern, the Dakota fire hole is the way to go. Because way less wood is needed to get a substantial impact, the amount of time and distance you would need to go to cut or forage would is drastically decreased. Because such little light is emitted by the flames, your location is far less likely to be detected as well. You can find other fire pit ideas here as well.

2. Perimeter Security On The Cheap

Protecting the prepper retreat, homestead, or campsite will be a high priority after a SHTF situation – but accomplishing the task needn’t be an expensive chore.

For less than $100 and many hours of your Saturday afternoon you can build some durable, reliable, low-tech perimeter security devices. Knowing as quickly as possible when a stranger is approaching could very well save your life during a SHTF scenario. High-tech security systems can be nothing more than useless junk when the power grid fails.

The rat trap and glow stick security “alarms” could be tripped by animals and need reset, but the minor inconvenience of hiking out to the perimeter of your prepper retreat and keeping a stockpile of glow sticks on hand is definitely worth the effort – keeping your family or mutual help group alive is always a high priority!

Rat Trap Security Alarm Supplies

  • Rat Traps
  • Glow Sticks
  • Sturdy string or rope – about six feet of string or rope
  • Power Drill
  • Green and brown Spray Paint
  • Rebar and hammer – optional

Instructions

  1. Drill two holes about a ½ apart on both sides of the center top and bottom of the rat trap. Make sure to drill the holes about a pinky finger width from the top to avoid splitting the thin wood the trap is comprised of.
  2. Spray paint the rat traps brown so they blend in with the tree they will be mounted upon.
  3. Spray paint the string or rope green so it blends in with the surroundings. You may want to add a few touches of brown paint to the top part of the string which will dangle from the rat trap and hang down close to the tree.
  4. Lace the twine or rope through the bottom holes, just as you would when starting to put shoe laces in the bottom of a pair of tennis shoes. Tie the ends of the string or rope firmly around the treat and knot it several times to help hold it firmly in place.
  5. Repeat this step at the top of the rat trap, but BEFORE you pull the lines tight, slide a glue stick through the string – essentially making it the middle of a string and rat trap “sandwich.” Now, pull the string or rope so it fits snugly around the tree and knot it into place.
  6. Tie another piece of string to the snapping mechanism of the trap. Knot it into place and then pull the string down towards the ground and tie it off on a heavy rock, stick, or piece of rebar you have driven into the ground with a hammer.
  7. Carefully, set the rat trap as you normally would when hunting varmints.

How It Works

When a personal (or possibly an animal) touches the trip string or rope, the rat trap released – hitting the glow stick. The family or mutual assistance group member on guard duty keeping a watchful eye on the perimeter will notice the glowing stick and initiate established security measures.

3. Signaling System

To create a silent signaling system which doesn’t need batteries, simply tie a piece of string to the glow stick and swing it around in the air to alert someone to you location at night. Not all glow stick comes with a tip with a hole for hanging, make sure to look at the image on the packaging and read details about the product before buying.

Glow sticks come in many colors, particularly if you purchase the ones designed to be created into necklaces and bracelets for kids to wear for fun. Your silent communication signaling system could be devised to be color based so members of your groups could quickly understand what variety of a threat or emergency is being shared.

4. Pop Tab Fishing Hooks

No matter how much gear you are able to purchase and store, the stockpile can eventually run out. Gathering items which would make excellent barter should ALWAYS be a priority on your SHTF plan.

Supplies

  • Pop tabs – that’s soda for all folks who didn’t grow up in Appalachia!
  • Multi-tool
  • Permanent marker

Instructions

  1. Lay the pop tab on a hard surface.
